How Do Fuel Pump Regulators Work?

The role of a fuel pump regulator is to control the pressure of the system delivering fuel to the engine in order to maintain an even delivery of fuel over the chin. Fuel pressure regulators are usually just fulcrums for high fuel pressures in order to maintain your fuel pressure around 40-60psi (in the case of EFI) by dumping most of your fuel back into the tank. The regulator helps the system keep a (relatively) stable pressure; when the pump produces too much pressure, the regulator sends fuel back to the tank through a return line. The stability of the air-fuel ratio is important for controlling engine movement that improves combustion and hence engine operation.

The regulator has a diaphragm that opens and closes against a spring, which is actuated by fuel pressure. As the fuel pressure rises over this preset value, the diaphragm compresses (this is an opening movement) and opens a valve, allowing surplus gasoline to return to basins. When the pressure falls, the spring pushes back the diaphragm which in turn closes it and stabilizes that pressure level. This self-regulating function draws from the regulator’s ability to rapidly respond to engine requirements, so it immediately provides the necessary fuel pressure when changes in demand are detected (i.e., acceleration or wide open throttle), ensuring a set fuel pressure at the injector.

Adjustable fuel pressure regulators are suitable for high-performance engines or those with forced induction, where the driver might need fine-tune control of fuel pressure based upon specific engine modifications. Turbocharged engines typically need 5-10 psi more than stock setting to ensure adequate fuel under boost. The regulator ensures just the right amount fuel reaches the engine for peak power performance without jeopardizing starvation or an overly-rich mixture that diminishes efficiency and contributes to higher emissions.

The regulator balances the flow pressure from any external pump in order to prevent erratic pressure dips, which could reduce engine efficiency, response and fuel savings — in other words, it acts as a sort of damper helping maintain stable and predictable vehicle performance.
